Walter Heckmann (association official)

Walter Heckmann (born September 29, 1942 in Eschweiler ; † April 19, 2009 there ) was a German association functionary and chairman of the Central Rhine Workers' Welfare District (AWO).

Life

Walter Heckmann was a fitter by profession. In 1957 he became a member of the Mining, Chemical and Energy Industrial Union (IGBCE). In 1958 he joined the SPD. Walter Heckmann had been a member of the Workers' Welfare Association since 1962. Here he was not only involved at the local level, but also quickly became a member of the AWO board of the Aachen district. In 1980 he was elected to the board of the AWO district Mittelrhein for the first time and has been chairman there since 1996. Until his death he was also chairman of the AWO district of Aachen.

Walter Heckmann was considered a committed social politician. From 1994 to 1999 he worked for the SPD in the Aachen district as a competent citizen in the social committee.

For his great voluntary commitment he was honored with the merit plaque of the Arbeiterwohlfahrt . He also received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on the ribbon . In 2010 the Walter-Heckmann AWO Senior and Social Center Herzogenrath was named after him.

When he died, a central memorial service of the Arbeiterwohlfahrt took place in the Coeln room of the Marie-Juchacz-Altenzentrum in Cologne-Chorweiler , to which mourners from all over Germany traveled.

Walter Heckmann was married and left behind a wife and children.
