Walter Hiesel made his debut in the A-League for Vienna as a midfielder in the 1962/63 season . At that time he played alongside Karl Koller , but was also at times brought forward to attack. With the Döblingern Walter Hiesel placed mostly in the middle of the league, after good performances he came himself on October 11, 1964 to a use in the Austrian national team in a 1-0 victory against the Soviet Union . In 1966 Walter Hiesel was lured away by Vienna Austria .

He experienced his most successful sporting period with the violets. Here he came on the side of Robert Sara or Alfons Dirnberger in midfield, or played with Thomas Parits , Johann Buzek , Johann Geyer , Ernst Fiala and Josef Hickersberger in attack. In addition to two third places in the championship, the ÖFB Cup was won against LASK in 1967 . Walter Hiesel had previously scored the only goal in the prestigious duel with Rapid in the semifinals . He also played a second international game in a 2-1 win against the Netherlands .

After two years with Austria, Walter Hiesel moved to the Grazer AK . Despite the prominent teammates Heinz Schilcher and Josef Stering , it was only enough for a tenth place, so that the midfielder went back to Vienna in 1969. But it should only take a year before his return to Styria, with the WSV Donawitz Walter Hiesel promptly rose to the National League in 1971. The club was able to easily establish itself as DSV Alpine and with greats like Peter Pumm , Helmut Siber , Hans Pirkner , Helmut Redl and Adi Knoll . Ultimately, however, in 1974, when he was sixth in the table in 17 teams, he was forced to be relegated due to the reform, with which Walter Hiesel ended his professional career.
