Walter Hollstein (born December 30, 1899 in Gotha , † April 15, 1977 in Basel ) was a German football coach and certified sports teacher.

Life

After graduating from the Ernestinum in Gotha, Walter Hollstein studied law in Munich and Jena . During this time he was also an active soccer and hockey player.

He then completed a degree in sports science at the German University for Physical Education in Berlin , which he graduated as a certified sports teacher.

Walter Hollstein was the father of the sociologist Walter Hollstein .

Career

Walter Hollstein as VFL coach at the final match for the German soccer championship 1951/52 TeBe Berlin - VFL Osnabrück (2: 1) in Berlin.

Hollstein's first coaching position was in the 1927/28 season at Tennis Borussia Berlin , where he a. a. Sepp Herberger trained. It is possible that the difficult relationship between the two led to their departure from the club. In 1929 he moved to the Swiss first division club FC Nordstern Basel for three years . When the DFB was looking for a successor to Reich trainer Otto Nerz in 1936 , there were two candidates: Sepp Herberger and his fellow student Walter Hollstein. Hollstein had been a successful coach at Werder Bremen since April 1935 and won the Gauliga championship in both seasons until 1937. In 1938 he took over the position at VfL Osnabrück , where he stayed until 1944 and was able to build on his successes in Bremen right from the start. The Osnabrück “Gartlager Elf”, which played twice for the German championship, is still famous today. After the war, he moved to Frankfurt as a sports lecturer to teach at the university there from 1945 to 1949. He also looked after the FSV Frankfurt team until 1947 . In 1948 he coached the league promoted 1. FC Rödelheim 02 until November and moved in January of the following year to Eintracht Frankfurt , which was also threatened by relegation , where he was able to secure relegation. A year later, in the summer of 1950, he resigned after another near relegation. He then moved to Lower Saxony and became NFV association trainer, head of the Barsinghausen sports school and coach of the German national soccer team for students . In April 1952, at the beginning of the championship finals , he took over the coaching position at VfL Osnabrück for a second time until 1954, together with Harry Hemmo.

successes

With Tennis Borussia Berlin, Hollstein set a German first division record by giving up only one point in 18 games by April 1928 and having a goal difference of 93:16.

With Werder Bremen he was in 1936 and 1937 , with VfL Osnabrück in 1939 and 1940 champions of the Lower Saxony Gauliga and then took part in the finals of the German championship.

Honors

Walter Hollstein was honorary chairman of the Association of German Football Teachers . In protest against the increasing commercialization of football, he gave back his title.
