Walter Kähler (born March 22, 1877 in Halle (Saale) ; † August 10, 1955 in Gadderbaum - Bethel , today Bielefeld ) was a Protestant theologian and most recently general superintendent in the Ecclesiastical Province of Pomerania of the Evangelical Church of the Old Prussian Union .

Life

Walter Kähler, son of Martin Kähler , was pastor at the Zionskirche in Bethel from 1905 to 1910 , then pastor of the old town parish in Bielefeld until 1919 and field preacher from 1914 to 1915 .

After the war , Kähler was a pastor in Münster until 1923 , where he was also a part-time consistorial councilor. After that, in 1923 he was initially acting, then regular general superintendent for the western district of the ecclesiastical province of Pomerania . After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, he, who was critical of National Socialist church policy, came under increasing pressure. He was a parish pastor for a short time, but then resigned. He was given leave of absence from his position as general superintendent in June and resigned in August. His installation for election as provost for the diocese of Kammin was prevented in advance. On April 1, 1934, he was forced into retirement due to a decree of the German Christian bishop Karl Thom . This succeeded him in the office of general superintendent for the western parish. In the Confessing Church founded in May 1934, Kähler was active from the start.

Kähler moved to Bethel, where he died in 1955.

As a student he became a member of the Hallenser and Greifswalder Wingolf.
