Walter Knödel (born May 20, 1926 in Vienna ; † October 19, 2018 in Stuttgart ) was an Austrian mathematician and professor of computer science at the University of Stuttgart .

Life

Walter Knödel studied mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna . He received his doctorate in 1948 in the field of number theory under Edmund Hlawka and completed his habilitation in 1953, also at the University of Vienna.

Walter Knödel was appointed to the chair for instrumental mathematics at the Technical University of Stuttgart in 1961 and also took over the management of the computing institute.

Act

Walter Knödel was the author of numerous scientific publications. In 1961 he wrote the first German-language textbook on computer programming: Programming of numeric computing systems.

He was the founding dean of the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Stuttgart and a founding member of the Society for Computer Science . After his retirement in 1991, as head of the Institute for Computer Science, he played a key role in rebuilding the computer science course at Leipzig University in 1992 and received the Caspar Borner Medal in 1993 in recognition of his services to Leipzig University.

The dumpling numbers are named after Walter Knödel.
