Walter Kolberg

Walter Kolberg (born March 13, 1899 in Güstow , Uckermark , † late 1954 in Vorkuta labor camp , Russia ) was a German politician and member of the state parliament ( CDU ). He was the victim of Stalinist persecution in the GDR.

Life

Walter Kolberg was trained as a baker after attending secondary school. In 1917 he was called up for military service. In 1921 he became a police officer and left the police force at his own request in 1933. In the 1930s he became self-employed in the bakery trade.

In August 1945 he was one of the founders of the CDU local group in Wolgast and became the city's deputy mayor. He was a member of the district council of the Greifswald district and from October 1946 belonged to the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . Here he worked with Werner Jöhren .

He was arrested on September 20, 1950. He was accused of having connections to the CDU's east office. In May 1951 a Soviet military tribunal in Schwerin sentenced him to 25 years of forced labor in a gulag for “espionage and illegal group formation” . He was deported to the Vorkuta labor camp, where he died in 1954.

The Archive for Christian Democratic Policy took over in early 2006 important pieces from the estate of Walter Kolberg.
