Walter Krüger (athlete)

Walter Krüger (born April 11, 1930 in Altenpleen ; † October 28, 2018 in Prohn ) was a German athlete who won the silver medal in the javelin throw at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome ( 79.36 m - 66.51 - 71.23 - 75.23 - 72.62 - invalid). In the competition he benefited from a good first throw, as the strong wind worsened the conditions in the further course and other throwers did not achieve the expected distances. Walter Krüger started at these Olympic Games for the GDR within a joint German team.

After a long injury, he ended his sports career in the spring of 1962 and became a coach. Later he worked as a sports teacher at a vocational school. Until 1990 he was honorary deputy mayor of the community of Groß Mohrdorf in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . He lived in Wendisch-Langendorf (near Stralsund ) from 1977 and in Prohn since 2016.

Walter Krüger started for the SC Tractor Schwerin . In his active days he was 1.90 m tall and weighed 93 kg.
