Walter Müller (archaeologist, 1946)

Walter Müller (born January 14, 1946 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) is a German classical and prehistoric archaeologist .

Life

Following a professional activity in the field of non-destructive material testing (1969–1975), Walter Müller majored in Classical Archeology and Prehistory and Protohistory at the Universities of Heidelberg, Mannheim and Munich. In 1985 he became a student of Wolfgang Schiering and Harald Hauptmann with the work Cretan clay vessels with marine decor. Development and position within the fine ceramics of Late Minoan IB on Crete at the University of Mannheim . Since 1985 he has been a research assistant at the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz, Research Center Corpus of the Minoan and Mycenaean Seals (CMS) based in Marburg , which he headed from 2002 until his retirement in 2011. Müller was editor of the corpus together with Ingo Pini . He was also in charge of the CMS databases, which were presented on the Internet in cooperation with Arachne in Cologne.

Müller took part in excavations and surveys in Solnhofen , on the Magdalensberg and in Rethymnon and Palekastro on Crete. His main research interests are ancient glyptics, Minoan art history and archaeometry (X-ray and ultrasound methods ).

Müller had a teaching position for the Aegean Bronze Age at the University of Marburg and is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .
