Walter Müller (born April 16, 1940 in Innsbruck , † June 10, 1966 at Sulzenauferner , Tyrol ) was an Austrian biathlete .

After finishing school, Müller began a commercial apprenticeship, but soon volunteered for the military, where he began cross-country skiing . At the beginning of the 1960s he switched to the customs guard and achieved good results in the patrol run at international customs championships, after which he started with the biathletes. Müller took part in the 1963 biathlon world championship in Seefeld in Tyrol and was 14th of the individual there. The high point of his career was participation in the 1964 Winter Olympicsin his hometown Innsbruck, with the biathlon competitions again being held in Seefeld. Müller achieved 34th place as the second best Austrian. After he had not contested any major international competitions in the winter of 1964/65, he again took part in the Biathlon World Championships in 1966 , which were held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In the individual he finished 27th and was eighth with Horst Schneider , Adolf Scherwitzl and Paul Ernst in the relay competition, which was held for the first time as part of the official competition. On June 10, 1966, Müller was hit by a slab of snow while training on Sulzenauferner in the Stubai Alps . He fell into a crevasse and could only be recovered dead.
