Walter Mengler

Walter Mengler (born November 26, 1952 ; † October 31, 2016 in Aachen ) was a German cellist and music teacher .

Live and act

After finishing school, Mengler studied violoncello at the Detmold University of Music and education at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen . In 1978 he was given a permanent position in the Aachen Symphony Orchestra , where, in addition to his concert appearances, he was responsible for the orchestra's violoncello group until September 2016. Mengler also devoted himself increasingly to chamber music . In addition, he took on a lectureship for specialist didactics at the University of Music and Dance Cologne , Aachen department and most recently at the Cologne headquarters. Mengler also gave numerous lectures on artistic and didactic topics in music-making, including at the European String Teacher Association (ESTA), of which he was president in the last years, and the German Society for Music Physiology and Musicians' Medicine .

Walter Mengler, who was left-handed himself and still had to learn to play the cello for right-handers at the age of six, has been advocating left-handed cello playing for many years. To this end, he was one of the first in Germany to write a 168-page study book in which he deals with the psychological and motoric conflict of a musical education that is contrary to one's own disposition, offers possible solutions for all instrument groups for possible "re-education" on the main motor side and provides the technical possibilities of the instruments as well as possible changes to them. In addition, he was invited to lectures and discussions on this topic nationwide and in neighboring countries, including the 1st German Symposium Left-Handed & Music in September 2005 in Hamburg.

In 1996 Mengler founded the Youth Symphony Orchestra Aachen (JSA) together with the former Aachen conductor Jeremy Hulin and has since worked mainly as an organizer for this orchestra. In the past 20 years, numerous young musicians between the ages of 10 and 20 have been able to experience their first major performances at home and abroad in a large orchestra with sophisticated classical music in the JSA up to the anniversary concert in 2016.

On October 31, 2016, Walter Mengler died after a brief serious illness, leaving behind his wife and three children. He found his final resting place in Aachen's Westfriedhof .
