Nehm studied in Bonn, Aachen and Clausthal and passed the exam as a mark separator in 1908 . Then he worked as an assistant in Aachen, worked in private mines and taught at the Agricultural University in Bonn-Poppelsdorf as a private lecturer . From 1915 to 1919 he served as a soldier. In 1930 he was appointed full professor in Clausthal, where he was elected university rector in 1935/36 . On April 1, 1936, he moved to the TH Aachen, where he was full professor for mine surveying and mining damage until 1946 and retired on January 1, 1947.

As the only professor at the Bergakademie Clausthal, Nehm dared to criticize the Nazi regime after seizing power in January 1933, and in one case he opposed the will of the Nazi leader Grothe. Nevertheless, he joined the NSDAP in May 1933 and signed the confession of the German professors to Adolf Hitler in November 1933 . Nehm was an expert in mining damage and mineral deposits , especially hard coal .
