Walter Scheller

Walter Scheller (born January 27, 1892 in Hanover ; † July 21, 1944 Brest-Litowsk ) was a German officer , most recently Lieutenant General in World War II .

Life

Scheller served as an officer in the First World War . After the war he switched to the Reichswehr and worked as a commander and general staff officer in various units. Promoted to major on April 1, 1933 , Scheller joined the Wehrmacht and rose to lieutenant colonel on September 1, 1935 . From October 1, 1937, he served as head of department in the Reich Ministry of War. Promoted to colonel on March 1, 1938 , he took command of the 66th Infantry Regiment in the Magdeburg area on November 10, 1938 .

After the outbreak of World War II , he became Chief of the General Staff of the Deputy General Command of the X Army Corps in Hamburg . On May 26, 1940 he took over the 8th Rifle Brigade, which he commanded in the second phase of the Western campaign and in April 1941 during the Balkan campaign .

During Operation Barbarossa , from July 1941 he was a staff officer in the Association of the 8th Panzer Division in the Baltic States . On October 1, he was raised to major general and on October 20, 1941, he was entrusted with the command of the 11th Panzer Division , whose command he officially took over on December 29. After a short reserve of leaders , he was in command of the 9th Panzer Division for a year from July 28, 1942 and was promoted to Lieutenant General on January 1, 1943 . On October 20, 1943, he took over the command of the 334th Infantry Division in Italy for a month . On November 27, 1943, he became commander of the 337th Infantry Division on the Central Eastern Front . On February 1, 1944, he briefly returned to the Führerreserve until he was appointed fortress commander of Brest-Litovsk on March 7, 1944. He fell in this position after the beginning of the Soviet summer offensive on July 21, 1944.
