Walter Schellhas

Rudolph Walter Schellhas (born April 26, 1897 in Freiberg ; † September 30, 1988 there ) was a German historian and librarian .

Life

Walter Schellhas served as an artilleryman during World War I , then studied German, history and English at the University of Leipzig and completed an apprenticeship at the Saxon State Library in Dresden and the German Library in Leipzig with the librarianship examination. From 1924 to 1935 Schellhas worked as a librarian at the Sächsische Landesbildstelle Dresden ( Deutsche Fotothek ). Then he was head of the city's cultural office in Freiberg until 1945. After World War II he was arrested because of his Nazi party membership and the NKVD - special camps Bautzen and Mühlberg interned.

On July 1, 1950, he was appointed the first full-time director of the library and archives at the Bergakademie Freiberg . Here he made a special contribution to the acquisition and indexing of mining science literature. He researched the history of Saxony and contributed with his source knowledge to the implementation of the anniversaries of his hometown Freiberg in 1938 (750th anniversary) and 1986 (800th anniversary).

The results of his work are documented in over 300 publications on his historical research.
