Walter Schmidt (born March 4, 1885 in Vienna , † April 26, 1945 in Berlin ) was an Austrian geologist, petrograph and mineralogist.

Life

Walter Schmidt was the son of a high school professor, historian and geographer Wilhelm Schmidt and brother of the meteorologist Wilhelm Schmidt . From 1903 he studied geology and zoology at the University of Vienna (among others with Othenio Abel , Karl Grobben ) with his doctorate in 1907. He then continued his studies at the Montanistische Hochschule Leoben with a diploma in 1912. There he was an assistant 1915 lecturer for geology and 1918 associate professor for mineralogy and petrography. During the First World War he was engaged in ore processing tasks that were important to the war effort (Bohemia, Saxony, the Balkans). In 1923 he completed his habilitation in theoretical mineralogy and geology in Leoben and taught there, in Göttingen (1926/27) and from 1927 as an associate professor and from 1928 (after a call to Munich was rejected) full professor of mineralogy and petrography in Tübingen. In 1930 he became professor of mineralogy and petrography at the TH Berlin-Charlottenburg . At the end of the Second World War he was drafted into the Volkssturm and fell in the battle for Berlin.

He was a representative of structural science and, along with Bruno Sander, one of its founders (statistical analysis of structural regulations, Schmidtsches Netz 1925).
