Walter Schumacher (born January 4, 1950 in Kaiserslautern ) is a German politician . As State Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Further Education and Culture of the Rhineland-Palatinate state government.

Life and work

After graduating from high school, Schumacher studied law at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken from 1968 . In 1971 he completed a traineeship at Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR) and in the following years worked as a freelancer at SR, and from 1976 also at Südwestfunk Mainz (SWF). From 1979 to 1994 he worked as an editor and presenter at SWF 3 in Baden-Baden. As a freelance author and presenter, Schumacher worked for various radio and television stations (SWF, SDR, HR, Deutschlandfunk, Deutsche Welle, Rias Berlin) from 1986. Among other things, he wrote a satirical weekly review in SWF 3 for over ten years, which he also spoke himself, and a cultural commentary in DLF.

When Kurt Beck took office in October 1994, Schumacher joined the administration of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate and was appointed government spokesman and permanent representative of the head of the State Chancellery in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Walter Schumacher is married and has two children.

Walter Schumacher is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). From 1974 to 1979 he was active in local politics in the city council of Kaiserslautern and in its culture committee.

Walter Schumacher has been State Secretary in the ministries headed by Doris Ahnen (SPD) since May 2010 : first in the Ministry of Education, Science, Youth and Culture (MBWJK) and from May 2011 in the Ministry of Education, Science, Further Education and Culture (MBWWK) .

He is also the representative of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate on the radio council of Deutschlandradios .
