Walter Schuster (plant breeder)
Walter Heinrich Schuster (born November 7, 1918 in Wetzlar ; † May 20, 2010 ibid) was a German agricultural scientist in the field of plant breeding .
Life
Schuster was an important plant breeder in Germany and was a student of Eduard von Boguslawski in Giessen, where he received his doctorate in 1951 with the dissertation "Investigations into the flowering and fertilization conditions of the sunflower (Helianthus annus L.)" agr. received his doctorate. After many years as a scientific clerk at the Federal Plant Variety Office , he went to the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . There he took over the management of the plant breeding department at the Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Breeding in the 1960s, where he completed his habilitation on the subject of "Inbreeding and heterosis in sunflowers", received the " venia legendi " on February 24, 1965 January 1971 appointed professor.
Schuster's activity extended to the cultivation of numerous conventional agricultural crops and those with a special cultural character: winter and summer rape , white and black mustard , oil radish , flax , sunflowers , soybeans , sorghum , phacelia , oil pumpkin and later maize. Since it was partly about the introduction of new plants, Schuster and his colleagues carried out extensive studies to clarify the flowering and fertilization biology as well as the growth physiology, which were reflected in numerous publications. Above all, he was concerned with crops that were in danger of being forgotten as objects of popular cultivation. The diversity of the species he breeds, probably more so than his most successful varieties, has also made him internationally known.
Most important work
Schuster achieved great merits as co-editor of the two-part work "Textbook of the Breeding of Agricultural Crops" , which was published in several editions, together with Mudra, Fischbeck and Plarre,
In total, at least 116 cultivars of 20 different species were made from material from Schuster, including the erucic acid-free rapeseed varieties that were the leading erucic acid-free varieties in Germany in the 1970s and 1980s. As an academic teacher, he supervised one post-doctoral student, 35 doctoral students and a large number of diploma students. He has published more than 240 scientific articles in journals and proceedings, eight specialist books and 16 articles in handbooks and textbooks. In addition, he published countless photos, not just scientific ones, that he himself took with the Leica.
