Walter Thimm

Walter Thimm (born May 24, 1936 in Dortmund ; † March 27, 2006 ) was a German educational scientist and sociologist. He taught as a professor specializing in general education for the disabled at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg . Thimm introduced the term sociology of the disabled into the German specialist discussion.

Career and impact

After studying to be a teacher at the Pedagogical Academy in Dortmund , Thimm studied pedagogy for the blind and visually impaired as well as sociology at the University of Hamburg . At the University of Hannover he became in 1970 a doctorate , the subject of his dissertation was "blindness as a social category". After working as an academic advisor at the Pedagogical Academy in Dortmund, Thimm worked from 1972 to 1980 as a professor of sociology for the disabled at the Heidelberg University of Education . From 1980 until his retirement in 2001 he taught and researched as a professor at the University of Oldenburg.

In addition to his collection of materials on the sociology of the disabled, his short introduction to the principle of normalization was also widely used and published several times. Together with the medical sociologist Christian von Ferber , Thimm was of great importance for the professional and socio-political anchoring of the normalization principle in German disability assistance .
