Walter Vogel (photographer)

Walter Vogel (* 1932 in Düsseldorf ) is a German photographer .

Life

Vogel has been taking photographs since 1950. In 1952 he began an apprenticeship as a machine fitter. After training as an engineer until 1957 and working for seven years as a designer and technical director in a chemical company, he studied photography with Otto Steinert at the Folkwang School in Essen from 1963 to 1968 .

Since 1954 he has published in magazines and in 1964 was awarded a prize in the World Press Photo competition. Vogel has been working as a freelance photojournalist since 1968. a. for Zeit-Magazin , and as an advertising photographer. Between 1977 and 2002 he lived in Frankfurt am Main .

He became known with portraits of Düsseldorf artists and other cultural workers, among them Joseph Beuys and Pina Bausch , as well as with photo reports about the Ruhr area . Travel reports led him to Italy, Africa and Asia. From 1993 he published a number of essay-like photo books, e.g. B. on the topic of coffee - café.
