Walter Ziegler (born March 23, 1859 in Debrník (Deffernik) with Mark Eisenstein ; † June 17, 1932 in Ach at Wanghausen Castle ) was a Bohemian - German and Austrian painter and graphic artist ( etcher , engraver , illustrator ) and non-fiction author .

Training and work

Walter Ziegler studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with William Unger and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Johann Leonhard Raab .

In Vienna he was a member of the Association of German Art Academics Athenaia. With the Zieglergraphik a process for the production of multi-colored artistic etchings was developed by him. In 1890 he was accepted into the Künstlerhaus Wien , shortly before he moved to Munich, where in 1891 he was one of the first board members in the Association for Original Etching .

From 1893 he often stayed at Wanghausen Castle in Ach an der Salzach, which belonged to his father Paul and after his death belonged to him. At his invitation, the castle became a meeting place and sometimes also a place of residence for several contemporary artists (including Maximilian Liebenwein from 1897 , later Paul Klee ). Around 1900, artists such as Paul Horst-Schulze (1876–1937) and Ignatius Taschner lived in nearby Burghausen , with whom he founded the School of Graphic and Decorative Art in Munich in 1900. In 1910 he was a member of the board of the German Art Association . In 1923 he was a founding member of the Innviertel artists' guild .

His work on manual printing techniques, which has appeared in several editions, is considered a standard work. In 1906 he was listed as a representative of German-Bohemian art. His works also include landscapes in particular.
