Walther Eichrodt

Walther Eichrodt (born August 1, 1890 in Gernsbach ; † May 20, 1978 in Münchenstein near Basel ) was a German and Swiss Protestant theologian and important Old Testament scholar .

Eichrodt was born in Gernsbach in Baden in 1890 as the son of the Grand Ducal Baden forestry master August Eichrodt and his wife Mathilde Kummer. He studied in Bethel , Greifswald and Heidelberg . He received his doctorate in 1916 with the work The Sources of Genesis re-examined and completed his habilitation in Erlangen in 1918 with a thesis on the subject of hope of eternal peace in ancient Israel - a contribution to the question of Israelite eschatology . From 1922 to 1960 he taught first as an associate professor and from 1934 as a full professor for the Old Testament and the history of religion at the University of Basel . In 1939 he received Swiss citizenship in Basel. In 1953 he was rector there . After his retirement in 1960, he held lectures until 1966.

Eichrodt was involved in the local church, he was a member of the Basel Mission , the parish council and also worked in the synod of the Basel Evangelical Reformed Church.

Honors

The Universities of Erlangen (1927) and Glasgow (1951) awarded him an honorary doctorate in theology.

Eichrodt researched the Old Testament and interpreted it against the background of the historical environment of Israel at the time. His most important work is the theology of the Old Testament , which has also been translated into English . Its basic idea is the covenant between God and man, which he sees as the center of the Old Testament.
