Walther Erbacher

Walther Erbacher (born August 18, 1940 in Karlsruhe ) is a German composer and university professor .

He studied composition with Jacques Wildberger , also with Olivier Messiaen and Humphrey Searle , music theory with Eugen Werner Velte , as well as musicology as part of school music studies, as well as music criticism at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe . In 1967 he passed the artistic maturity examination for composition and the state examination as a music theory teacher.

Act

In the late 1960s Erbacher worked for a few years as a freelance music journalist for the press and radio, then from 1970 to 1974 as an assistant for musicology at the University of Karlsruhe. From 1971 to 2005 Erbacher taught music theory and analysis at the Karlsruhe University of Music, and from 1973 to 1984 he also taught composition at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts . At the same time he worked as a high school teacher from 1967 to 2005.

During his studies as well as in the immediate following years, Erbacher received several scholarships from the state of Baden-Württemberg for the Darmstadt summer courses , including performances of his own pieces. In 1967 he received the sponsorship award from the city of Stuttgart. On the occasion of the “Cologne Courses for New Music” in 1969 with Mauricio Kagel , Erbacher shot an experimental television film (“Music and Image”) on WDR .

In 1974 Günter Bialas passed the Upper Silesian Composer Prize on to Erbacher, with the condition that he made contacts across the Iron Curtain from the FRG to Poland, especially with Upper Silesian composers, during the Warsaw Autumn .

Active participation in several congresses, including the international organ congresses at the Gnessin Music Academy in Moscow (1995, 2006 and 2007) with a focus on neurophysiological problems in composing temporal processes. These basic ideas, first presented in 1995, led to a book manuscript on “The Time Problem in Music” (completed in 2006).

So far Erbacher has composed around 60 pieces of almost all genres and ensembles.
