Walther Lohmeyer

Walther Lohmeyer (born April 27, 1890 in Stuttgart ; † May 9, 1951 in Ascona ( Switzerland )) was a German-Swiss publisher and writer.

Life

Walther Lohmeyer was born Friedrich Wilhelm Walther Lohmeyer on April 27, 1890, the only child of the publishing house book dealer Friedrich Lohmeyer (* 1863) and Luise Lohmeyer-Wunderlich in Stuttgart. In 1908 he graduated from grammar school and studied literary history, political science and philosophy in Tübingen , Berlin and Heidelberg . He completed his studies in 1912 with a dissertation entitled “The mass scenes in older German drama” with Max von Waldberg in Heidelberg.

On February 6, 1916, Lohmeyer moved from Stuttgart to Zurich, where he worked as a journalist. In January 1916 he was employed on a trial basis at Verlag Huber & Co. in Frauenfeld , where he stayed until August 31, 1918 and published works by Robert Walser and Paul Ilg , among others .

In 1918 he worked for the Basler National-Zeitung . Lohmeyer was a co-founder of Rhein-Verlag in 1919 ; he worked together with his father as managing director of this publishing house. In his work there, he was responsible for translations by James Joyce , among other things . In 1929 he and his father left the publishing house.

From 1931 to 1935 Lohmeyer worked as editor of the monthly magazine for a healthy lifestyle . He first moved to Zug in 1934 and then to Zurich on May 3, 1937, to his father's apartment.

In 1935 the book "Das stumme Deutschland redet: Talks mit Deutschen von W." was published, which was probably written by Walther Lohmeyer and which criticized National Socialism .

From 1934 Lohmeyer worked as a freelance journalist, including for the federal government and the Catholic Neue Zürcher Nachrichten . In his life he wrote over 20 books and countless newspaper articles.

Lohmeyer died unexpectedly of a stroke on May 9, 1951 in Ascona.
