Walther Schultze (historian)

Walther Schultze (born May 9, 1862 in Kolberg / Pomerania ; † February 21, 1939 in Berlin ) was a German historian and librarian .

Life

Schultze studied history , German and philosophy at the Humboldt University in Berlin and the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . In 1883 he received his doctorate in Halle (Dr. phil.) With a dissertation on the history of the Cluniacensische and Lorraine monastery reform in the 10th century. In 1886 he joined the University Library in Halle until he moved to the Prussian State Library in 1906 . Here he became a department director in 1922. In the same year he succeeded Paul Schwenke as editor of the Zentralblatt für Bibliothekwesen , a position he held until 1936.

As a librarian, he made special contributions by building up a collection of extra sheets, leaflets, picture sheets, songs, posters and caricatures from the time of the First World War .

As a historian, he published a number of works, particularly on early German history . He also edited the speeches by Rudolf von Bennigsen and Johannes von Miquel .
