The Quedlinburg roller foundry and chill casting plant (WHQ) is a traditional metalworking company in the city of Quedlinburg in Saxony-Anhalt . Parts of the factory are listed .

location

The work is located in the Süderstadt district south of the historic Quedlinburg old town at the address Klopstockweg 33 and is entered in the Quedlinburg monument register. A new building was erected from 2011 on the opposite side of the newly built An der Walze street, adjacent to the railway facilities.

Architecture and history

The factory was founded in 1865 by Karl Wolf as an iron foundry and emerged from a forge in Quedlinburg's old town. Other sources name Paul Leder as the founder. It was one of the first companies in the southern city and dealt with hard cast iron . Rudolph Leder renamed the company in the next few years as Hartgusswerk und Maschinenbau Anstalt . The main focus of production and development was chilled cast iron, which was used to manufacture machine parts subject to direct stress. So were Müllereiwalzen manufactured in larger numbers. In 1897 the 10,000. Milling roller delivered.

The current plant was built in the years 1896 and 1899 in a neoclassical style. The central office building was built in 1914 and parts of its interior design are still in the state in which it was built. This applies in particular to the room layout , the stairwell and the time clock .

In the period after 1945, the company was nationalized and later as a branch operation of the rolling Coswig in Saxony Coswig affiliated. The production was modernized. Pre-calibrated rollers were produced from the early 1960s. A magnesium insertion process was patented by Helmuth Matlach for the production of rollers made of alloyed cast iron with spheroidal graphite .

The plant had its own laboratory that made scientific research possible. They also trained themselves. A new foundry hall was built in the 1980s. In addition, CNC lathes were purchased.

In the course of the political change in the GDR , the branch was converted into a corporation on July 1, 1990, whose shares were held by the Treuhandanstalt . The privatization took place on January 1, 1993 through a management buy-out to Heinz Schilling and Bernd Kahlenberg. The success of the privatization was made possible in particular by the investments made in the 1980s to modernize the company.

This was followed by the purchase of two modern electrically operated melting furnaces, each of which can melt four tons. In addition, additional CNC machines were purchased for processing the quantities melted in the foundry. Schilling and Kahlenberg retired in 2003 when they retired as managing directors, but remained majority shareholders. Rainer Busch, who has been with the company since 1986, and Hartmut Smolny followed as managing directors. Smolny later left. Martin Schrumpf took his place. Lutz Bartels became the authorized representative.

The company operates as a GmbH and produces wear-resistant cast products and in particular rollers and roller shells for the steel, pipe and ceramic industries. In addition, the products are also in demand from mechanical engineering and the food industry. This is how grinding rollers, chocolate rollers and tobacco rollers are also made. Metering rollers , soap rollers and chilled cast pistons are also manufactured. 110 people are employed.
