Wamel is a place in the Dutch province of Gelderland . It is part of the municipality of West Maas en Waal and is located about three kilometers east of Tiel on the left bank of the Waal . A ferry service connects the two villages of Tiel and Wamel. The places have also been connected by a self-supporting concrete bridge structure since 1973, the first of its kind in the Netherlands.

Wamel was an independent community until it was merged with Appeltern and Dreumel in 1984 . The new community was initially called Wamel ; however, the name was changed to West Maas en Waal in 1985 .

In 2001 the city of Wamel had 1825 inhabitants. The built-up area of ​​the city was 0.64 km² and included 699 apartments. The administrative area of Wamel , which also includes the outskirts of the village and the surrounding landscape, had around 2,445 inhabitants in 2018.

The first known mention of Wamel in the spelling Vamele (ford) comes from the year 893 AD. Around 1445 a clerical monastery was founded in Wamel.
