Dixie Wanda Hendrix (born November 3, 1928 in Jacksonville , Florida , † February 1, 1981 in Burbank , California ) was an American film and television actress .

Life

Adolescent years

Dixie Wanda Hendrix was born to Max Sylvester and Mary Faircloth Hendrix in Jacksonville, Florida. After graduating from high school, Hendrix joined a small amateur theater company in her home town, where she was discovered by a Warner Brothers talent scout and got a contract in Hollywood , California .

Profession and marriage

She shot her first film, Confidential Agent , in 1945 and in the first few years appeared mostly in B-movies . In the late 1940s, she has appeared in more demanding films such as ride on the Pink Horse (Ride the Pink Horse) (1947) and Miss Tatlock's Millions (1948). She starred alongside Tyrone Power in In the Clutches of Borgia (Prince of Foxes) (1949).

Audie Murphy saw her on the cover of a magazine in 1949 and asked her to meet. They married soon after, but the marriage did not last long. Hendrix later said that Murphy asked her to quit her job. What bothered her more, however, was that Murphy, who suffered from post- traumatic stress disorder ( PTSD ) from World War II , slept with a loaded revolver and had aimed the gun at her during one of his flashback attacks. In 1951 they divorced. But in her later years she spoke of him with compassion.

Hendrix went back to work but had a hard time getting good roles. In 1954 she married Jim Stack. She listened with acting and only appeared occasionally on television shows on such as in My Three Sons (My Three Sons) and Bewitched (Bewitched) .

She died of double pneumonia in Burbank, California, aged 52, and was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery .
