Wang Du (Chinese 王 度; * 1956 in Wuhan , China ) is a contemporary Chinese sculptor and installation artist who has lived in Paris , France since 1990 .

life and work

Wang Du was born in Wuhan , the capital of east China's Hubei Province , and studied at the College of Design, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in Canton from 1981 to 1985 . In 1986 he founded the artist group "The Salon of Artists of Southern China", of which he was chairman until 1990. The Tian'anmen massacre in Beijing's Tian'anmen Square in the summer of 1989 prompted them to leave China. The artist has lived in Paris since 1990; his works were exhibited there for the first time in 1994. In 1998/1999 he was a teacher at the École supérieure d'art de Brest and from 1997 to 2002 he taught in the Visual Arts Department of the University of Paris VIII .

In his figurative work, Wang Du creates three-dimensional structures from media products. His bronze cast plastic China Daily, Services top task for games , which is located in the Sculpture Park Viersen , shows, for example, a crumpled up page from the largest English-language Chinese daily, China Daily . The letters of the text in which the preparations for the 2008 Summer Olympics were reported in 2007 are engraved. The official government paper only reported trivialities about the games, the plastic shows them as a discarded sheet of paper, the artist achieves the effect through the oversized shape.

Wang Du often uses a large accumulation of media products to create accessible, spatial arrangements. "Abundance or overabundance, which gives the impression of rubbish and rubbish, and the fragmentary isolation, both oversized or oversized, create the impression of a world buried in media, of being covered in and thus being attacked."

The artist loves photographic representations of reality. His Yellow Pages object looks outwardly like a series of international directories, similar to the books in the German Yellow Pages . The content of the volumes consists of 30,000 pictures showing views of his home country China.

Works by Wang Dus are in public collections, for example in Paris in the Center Georges Pompidou , in Beijing in the UCCA (Ullens Center for Contemporary Art) and in San Francisco in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and in the Musée de Monaco.
