from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wang Fuzhou ( Chinese  王富洲 , Pinyin Wáng Fùzhōu ; * 1935 in Xihua ; † July 18, 2015 in Beijing ) was a Chinese mountaineer who succeeded in the first ascent of Mount Everest on the north side. He was the first Chinese on the highest mountain in the world.

Wang graduated from China Geosciences University in 1958 . In the same year he climbed Lenin Peak , and in 1959 Muztagata .

Together with Qu Yinhua and the Tibetan Gongbu (also Konbu, Gonpa) he reached the summit of Mount Everest on May 25, 1960 via the Three Steps . This ascent was controversial for many years because there is no meaningful summit photo, but it is now generally recognized. The first ascent via the northern route was also used for propaganda purposes and highlighted by the Maoist government of China as a sign of the superiority of the communist system .

In 1964, Wang and nine other alpinists made the first ascent of Shishapangma , the last eight-thousander that had not yet been climbed .
