Wang Xianqian ( Chinese  王先謙  /  王先谦 , W.-G. Wang Hsien-ch'ien ; 1842 - 1917 ), also Yuwu益吾(zi) or Kuiyuan (葵園), was a versatile Confucian scholar and philologist of the late Qing Dynasty .

Life

Wang Xianqian is from Changsha , Hunan . He was a member of the Hanlin Academy and was well versed in the Confucian classics and in classical prose and poetry. He taught at the Yuelu Academy (of which he was also director) and the Chengnan Academy (Chengnan shuyuan 城南 书院), both in Changsha. His works include his sequel to Huang Qing jingjie , known under the titles Xu Huang Qing jingjie续 皇 清 经 解 and Huang Qing jingjie xubian皇 清 经 解 续编, written in 1430 juan, which contains 209 writings on Confucian classics in the Jiaqing and Guangxu periods and first printed in the Nanjing Academy (Nanjing shuyuan 南 菁 書院) of Jiangyin . This was followed by the compilation of the Xu gu wen ci lei zuan 续古文 辞 类 纂 / 續 古文 辭 類 纂. He is the author of a number of works valued by Chinese scholars, including the Collected Commentaries on Xunzi ( Xunzi jijie荀子 集解) and Zhuangzi ( Zhuangzi jijie庄子 集解), his supplementary commentary on Hanshu (Hanshu buzhu 汉书 补 注), and others .

In Jiangyin he also published books such as Nanjing shuyuan congshu南 菁 书院 丛书, Qingjia ji清 嘉 集, and Jiangzuo zhiyi jicun 江左 制 义 辑 存.

At the time of the Hundred Day Reform (1898), he opposed the radical ideas of Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao . He recommended studying Western scientific knowledge. He was also involved in mine development and the railroad business.
