course

Pferdebach near the University of Witten / Herdecke

The Wannenbach rises in Wullen as a horse brook . There it runs largely piped under the earth's surface, only a short section of the stream is exposed south of the University of Witten / Herdecke . Until the end of the 1960s, the Pferdebach still flowed from its source in Hummelbeck / Wullen in its natural open bed, up to the piping from around the former sports field on Pferdebachstraße, at the confluence of Bebelsdorf Street. From the source, after crossing under the street Im Hummelbeck, the horse brook followed the course of the old street Im Wullen in a valley. He crossed under this at the entrance to the former Wullenstrasse 151, the location of the former Wullen steam brickworks. To the east of here it ran, dividing the sloping, then agricultural land roughly in the middle, between the brickyard and the Pferdebachstrasse. There is a rain retention basin at the level of the Dirschauer Straße settlement . From there, the water flows a short distance in a bed of concrete lined with concrete until it disappears again in the pipe system in front of the Pferdebachstrasse. Opposite the Marienhospital on the upper main street there used to be a bar called Perdstränke. In the old days, when the stream was still open, the horses of the stagecoach are said to have been watered and exchanged here. Coming from its route from Wullen, the piping of the stream runs almost parallel to the Witten-Dortmund railway line . Only in the Heven district of Wannen does the stream come back to the surface, but again for the most part it flows in a concrete bed. However, it was carefully renatured in the 1980s and 1990s.

Shortly before the estuary, it also flows over the site of the cast steel plant in Witten . Past the Witten-Wannenbach pumping station on the Ruhrdeich , which was newly built in 2007 , the stream runs parallel to Herbeder Straße until it flows into the Ruhr. In heavy rain , the pumping station can relieve up to 21 m³ per second in the Wannenbach, which is why additional flood protection measures were taken along the stream.

The Wannenbach in Witten's industrial history

As early as 1263, the von Witten am Wannenbach ran a mill . In 1724 the Remscheid manufacturer Peter Lange built a hammer mill on Wannenbach, which until 1902 was one of the most important of its kind in the Ruhr region. It was closed in 1902.
