Warm Leatherette ( Warm Leatherette ) is the title of a 1978 song released the music project The Normal from Daniel Miller . The track is on the B-side of the single TVOD (TV Overdose).

Emergence

Inspired by the 1977 EP Spiral Scratch by the Buzzcocks and the emerging do-it-yourself movement, in which bands released their works without the help of big music labels , Daniel Miller came up with the idea of founding an independent label and creating his own music there publish.

“I don't know if I've even heard any of the records. But I got infected by the energy The Bicycles brought across in the Melody Maker article where they talked about how easy it is to make a record. "

- Daniel Miller

He generated the music on a Korg 700S and recorded a text inspired by JG Ballard's novel Crash in his own four-track mini-studio . The single was released with a cover that shows crash test dummies at the wheel and Miller's address on the back under the catalog number MUTE001 on Mute Records .

“I never thought of approaching a major label. I didn't like them because they ruined some of my favorite bands. "

- Daniel Miller in an interview with the New Musical Express in 1981

The lyrics of the song describe a car accident in which a couple dies but still has sex before they die. The text refers to the novel Crash by James Graham Ballard .

reception

The single sold surprisingly well with 30,000 copies. The address printed on it aroused the interest of numerous artists who sent Miller their demo tapes. The first artist Miller signed was Frank Tovey ( Fad Gadget ).

"Before I knew what was happening to me, I ran a record company - I worked from home, with no employees or something, but it was a label anyway."

- Daniel Miller

Andy Kellman from Allmusic writes in his review that the title sounds “like the dark cartoon version of a broken dot matrix printer: clinically pristine, minimalist and eerie.” (“The track sounds like a darkly cartoonish version of a malfunctioning dot matrix printer: clinically pristine , minimal, and sinister. ") and awards 4.5 out of five possible stars.
