Life

In 1973 Wagner received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of New Mexico . In 1977 he graduated with a Master of Science degree in biology. In 1981 he received his doctorate with a thesis A systematic and evolutionary study of the Oenothera caespitosa species group, Onagraceae for Ph.D. at Washington University in St. Louis . The research work for this study took place under the direction of the botanist Peter H. Raven , the longtime director of the Missouri Botanical Garden . From 1981 to 1982 Wagner was a postdoctoral fellow at the Missouri Botanical Garden. From 1982 to 1988 he worked at the Bernice P. Bishop Museum . From 1983 to 1988 he conducted research at the Lyon Arboretum .

From 1988 Wagner worked at the Institute of Botany of the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution . He also conducted research at the National Tropical Botanical Garden . Since 1992 he has been an assistant professor at Duke University . Wagner's main research interests are systematics, biogeography , floristry and the evolutionary patterns of different groups of seed plants . He is particularly interested in the island flora of the Pacific Ocean and the evening primrose family (Onagraceae), for which he published a revision in 2007.

Wagner uses morphological and molecular data for his studies in the field of biodiversity and population biology . He also researches the phylogenetic relationships and the vegetation- geographical patterns of plant groups. Wagner often works with other scientists, including Harold Ernest Robinson , Peter Raven, Peter C. Hoch and Derral R. Herbst . Wagner conducted extensive botanical field studies in Canada, the Hawaiian Islands, Mexico, the Marquesas, Taiwan, and the United States.

As an author or co-author, Wagner described over 200 different plant taxa. His scientific articles have appeared in various journals, including Adansonia , the Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden , the American Journal of Botany , Biochemical Systematics and Ecology , the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , Brittonia , Novon , and the International Journal of Plant Sciences , in Systematic Botany and in Taxon . In addition, Wagner wrote articles for the Flora of China project .

In 1988 the work Indexed Bibliography on the flowering plants of Hawaiʻi was published , which Wagner wrote in collaboration with Susan W. Mill, Donald P. Gowing and Derral R. Herbst. In 1990 he published the two-volume Manual of the Flowering Plants of Hawaii with Dawn Frame, Derral R. Herbst and Seymour H. Sohmer , a standard work in which all the seed plants of the Hawaiian Islands known at the time are listed. In 1999 a revised second edition appeared. In 1995 he and Victoria A. Funk edited the work Hawaiian Biogeography: Evolution on a hot spot archipelago .

Wagner is a member of various organizations, including the American Society of Plant Taxonomists , the Botanical Society of America and the International Association for Plant Taxonomy .

Awards

In 1992, Wagner's Manual of the Flowering Plants of Hawaii received the Allan Gleason Award from the New York Botanical Garden . In 1993 he received the Engler Medal in Silver from the International Association for Plant Taxonomy for the same publication. In 1995 Wagner received the Robert Allerton Award from the National Tropical Botanical Garden for his services in the field of tropical botany and horticulture . In 2008 he received the Botanical Society of America's Merit Award for his botanical services.
