The Manic-1 hydropower plant ( French: Centrale Manic-1 ) is a storage power plant in the Canadian province of Québec . It is located in the Côte-Nord region , about three kilometers west of Baie-Comeau and just before the mouth of the Rivière Manicouagan . Together with the neighboring McCormick hydropower station , it uses the Manic 1 reservoir as a reservoir. The power plant has three Francis turbines , the installed capacity is 184 MW . The power plant is operated by the state-owned energy supply company Hydro-Québec .

history

Between 1949 and 1956 the Manicouagan Power Company (MPC) built a 126 MW power plant on the waterfalls of the Rivière Manicouagan near its mouth. The energy demand increased continuously, also due to the operation of grain elevators and an aluminum smelter in the area. The McCormick hydroelectric power station was fed by the Barrage McCormick, completed in 1959, which regulated the water level. During the implementation of the Manic Outardes project, it was recognized that the hydropower at the river mouth could be better exploited. At the request of Hydro-Québec, the MPC expanded the capacity of the McCormick power plant. In addition, Hydro-Québec built the Manic-1 hydropower plant next to the existing power plant from 1964 and commissioned it in 1966/67.

The Barrage Manic-1 dam consists of a concrete middle section, which contains the power station house, and a dike on each side. The western levee is 85 meters long, while the east levee, which connects to the Barrage McCormick , measures 110 meters. The drainage channel is a 610 meter long, 22 meter wide and 85 meter deep trench. The drop height is 36.6 meters, but can fluctuate between 34 and 39 meters due to the tides . The Manic-1 power plant was originally only intended to cover peak loads ; the planned annual output was 40 GWh.
