Another focus is the work in the school and youth sector. Targeted support is intended to introduce young canoeists to competitive sport. The association conducts talent scouts in cooperation with Mannheim schools. The association organizes and supports regattas that serve social purposes such as the “Sport against Violence” campaign. The water sports club enables two schools in the north of Mannheim to have additional physical education by making its sports hall available for use and providing a trainer.

history

Water sports were practiced on the Old Rhine as early as 1903 , but not yet in the structures of a sports club. The Mannheim-Sandhofen water sports club was founded on April 25, 1925. In 1929 a boathouse was built, which was inaugurated on September 1, 1929. In 1933 the water sports clubs "Freie Schwimmer Mannheim-Sandhofen" and the "Arbeiter-Wassersportverein Mannheim-Sandhofen", whose boathouses were also located on the Riedspitze, were banned.

On October 20, 1935, the boathouse with more than 80 boats was completely destroyed by a fire that was unexplained. On April 6, 1946, 60 people present called the WSV Sandhofen back to life in the “Goldener Hirsch” inn. In 1957, the construction of a club house began on its own land. The expansion was completed in 1965.

From 1962 to 1966 the regatta course was expanded, making larger regattas possible. In the 1960s and 1970s, the promotion of young talent was intensified in the era of coach Helmut Noller; the club turned into a racing club. In 1982 the association became a federal base in canoe racing; the performance class area has been further developed. The new state training center was inaugurated on April 21, 1989. The friends' association was founded in 1990.

In December 1992 the most successful German canoeist, Birgit Fischer, switched to WSV, who achieved five Olympic victories for the club in 1996, 2000 and 2004. Further Olympic victories from the ranks of the association: Detlef Hofmann (1996) and Carolin Leonhardt (2004).

In 2004, a fire razed the entire boathouse. In 2009 the construction of a new boathouse and an athletes pavilion began.
