The Heinersdorf Water Tower is a building erected in 1910 as a town hall and water tower in the Heinersdorf district of Berlin . It has a total height of 46 meters and is a listed building .

history

After its completion, the square tower was to serve mainly as a town hall and also as a water tower. That is why it had a copper dome and a clock tower as architectural decoration. The plan to build a town hall for the then still independent community could never be realized because of the First World War . After that it was unnecessary because Heinersdorf was incorporated into Greater Berlin in 1920 . However, the town hall tower could no longer be used as a water tower because the water supply was meanwhile provided by means of pressure water pipes laid underground. At the time, the Heinersdorfer windmill stood on a hill in front of it.

In 1934/1935, a school building and a gymnasium were built directly at the water tower according to plans by architect Richard Ermisch . In 1944 a flak position was installed on the tower .

After the Second World War , the Soviet armed forces used the tall building to monitor air traffic with Tegel Airport . At the same time, the two lower floors served temporarily as a school.

The tower had stood empty since the Allies withdrew from Berlin and was advertised for sale by the responsible district office . This action was unsuccessful, which is why the building then fell to the real estate fund, which repeatedly offered it for sale. At the beginning of 2008 there was a new owner (name not known) who wants to extensively refurbish the tower and convert it for residential purposes. The surrounding area is also included in the new use. Here is u. a. a BVG substation .

On June 24, 2014, the interior of the tower burned out. Despite the large number of fire brigades, the fire could not be fought effectively because the lower floors of the wooden staircase had already been completely destroyed when the emergency services arrived. The cause of the fire is still unclear.
