Architecture and history
The massive water tower was built in 1881 in connection with the construction of the old Quedlinburg waterworks and served as a water reservoir for the nearby settlement on the Munzenberg. The plastered building rests on a base made of quarry stones and its design is reminiscent of high Romanesque palaces . There is a corner cuboid at the corners. In addition, the windows in the tower are coupled and provided with set columns.
The association Sternwarte Quedlinburg eV as the new owner (from 2017) is converting the building into an observatory (as of 2017). On May 24, 2013, an observatory dome originally intended for scrapping was brought to the tower from a demolished Oschersleben school, which had been rescued and stored years ago by local astronomy enthusiasts, and was initially placed next to the building with a crane. Then a false ceiling was first inserted and the dilapidated old pointed roof torn down. A new concrete floor was poured in its place and a new upper floor was built in 2016. The renovated Zeiss observatory dome has already been placed on top of this with a crane. A steel column was erected in this in August 2017. A first observation device (Zeiss Meniscas on Zeiss 1B mount) was temporarily mounted on this in August 2017 for first observations. An intermediate platform necessary for observation was installed at the beginning of September 2017. Later an existing "Celestron" to 14 "there - Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope are mounted on the ground floor is to be built next to sanitary facilities and storage space, a training and conference room in the basement is in August and September 2017 by the local..
