Life

Vasily Liwanow comes from a Russian family of actors. His grandfather Nikolai was already a well-known theater actor, his father Boris Liwanow ( Russian Борис Николаевич Ливанов ) was a celebrated and popular actor in the "Moscow Art Theater" MChaT and his mother Yevgenia Liwanowa ( Russian Евгения Лазио ) was also an actress.

In 1954, after graduating from the Moscow Academy of Arts, he attended the BW Shchukin Theater College in his hometown of Moscow until 1958 . In 1960 he was part of the ensemble of the Central Studio of Film Actors , but at the same time he made his first film A Letter That Never Got It (Neotprawlennoje pismo, Russian: Неотправленное письмо ).

After various film and television productions, he played in 1968, under the direction of Konrad Wolf , the captain Wadim Gejman in the DEFA anti-war film I was nineteen , for which Liwanow received the Heinrich Greif Prize of the GDR in 1969 . In the mid-1960s he also tried his hand at filming and writing after studying at the Moscow Film School. He made several cartoons and as a writer also wrote a number of children's books and fairy tales.

Liwanow gained particular fame through his impersonation of Sherlock Holmes in the Soviet film adaptations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novels from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. These film adaptations are characterized by a particularly authentic reproduction of the time around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, as well as excellent acting performances by the two main actors Liwanow and Witali Mefodjewitsch Solomin (Dr. Watson). Mainly because of this achievement, Liwanow was awarded the Order of the British Empire by the British Queen in 2006. In addition, Liwanow became known for speaking the crocodile Gena in the well-known Soviet cartoons about the character Cheburashka .
