action

The blackmail king

Charles Augustus Milverton is one of the meanest criminals in London . He lives in a large estate in a posh area, guarded by guards and a high stone wall. However, his fortune was not made righteously, but through blackmail . In Puritan England towards the end of the 19th century, Milverton sought premarital and extramarital relationships and offered his victims to buy evidence back from him so that their secret would remain undetected. Before her wedding, Lady Eva was careless about exchanging letters with a civil servant. However, she later married a very conservative lord. Milverton, who bought the letters, offers her not to let the wedding break and to buy the letters for a "very moderate price". Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson , who were hired by Lady Eva, see no legal way to steal the letters and decide to steal and destroy the compromising letters.

In disguise, Holmes manages to hire a worker named Ascot at Milverton to find the security weaknesses. Together with Dr. Watson, they break into Milverton's house, believing he is asleep.

However, the great detective and his assistant turn out to be very bad burglars. Holmes cuts his hand on the glass, and Dr. Watson forgets his towel in the conservatory. When they break into Milverton's study, they discover that he still has a meeting with a servant who wants to sell him compromising letters from her mistress. However, it is not a servant, but Lady Huxley, who was previously blackmailed by Milverton: when she refused to pay, her husband died of a heart attack after he received the letters. Lady Huxley shoots Milverton and escapes. Seeing it all, Holmes and Watson quickly destroy any compromising material and flee from Milverton's servants; in the process, Watson loses a shoe.

Thus Scotland Yard receives samples of Holmes' blood as well as the handkerchief and shoe of Dr. Watson. The second shoe is burned just in time for Lestrade to come to Holmes for help on the case. Lestrade describes the characteristics of one of the intruders, and Holmes replies that these characteristics apply to all - even Watson. Lestrade laughs at this joke while behind him the leftover shoe burns in the fireplace. Afterwards, Holmes comments on what lousy criminals they are.

Holmes and Watson seek out Lady Huxley, who still has one of Milverton's documents that she snatched from his desk when she escaped. The lady pretends to be unsuspecting, but sends the document to Holmes. Holmes sets out to decipher the code and discovers that Milverton had not worked of his own accord, but was the financier of one of London's greatest criminals, Professor Moriarty .

The deadly fight

After Holmes discovers the real criminal brain in London, things get tough for him in London. When Watson and Holmes visit a card club, Watson becomes aware of a card game in which a young nobleman named Ronald Adair plays cards together with Colonel Moran (whom Holmes describes as England's second most dangerous criminal) and, after the game, accuses him of misconduct in private. what Watson sees. Meanwhile, Holmes is brought by Moriarty's henchmen to a mysterious house, where he faces Moriarty. However, he manages to knock out the crime boss and escape.

After surviving an arson attack on 221b Baker Street , Holmes and Watson must escape to Europe. Separated from Holmes, Watson climbs into a train compartment at London Central Station that he shares with an old lady. After the train leaves, the lady turns out to be Holmes in disguise. But Moriarty is hot on Holmes' heels and is following them in a newfangled automobile .

Holmes and Watson make it to Switzerland, where they stop at a mountain hotel. The landlord, Peter Steiler the Younger, recognizes Holmes and receives him euphorically: Holmes had hunted him down at the time, but also saved him from detention and obtained the mildest sentence in court. After his release, Steiler opened a hotel in Meiringen, Switzerland in the Alps.

While walking, the friends are surprised by a stone fall. Holmes thinks he is a dangerous companion, but Watson has no intention of leaving Holmes. At the Reichenbach Falls , a messenger boy from the hotel reaches the two of them and delivers a message from Steiler: An English woman suffering from tuberculosis needs help, but refuses all doctors after she has learned that an English doctor lives in the hotel. Watson goes to the hotel and Holmes stays by the waterfall.

Suddenly Moriarty appears. Since he has mastered the deadly oriental fight baritsu, he believes that he will have an easy game. He even allows Holmes to send a note to Dr. Watson to leave behind. In this, Holmes Watson asks to keep an eye on Ronald Adair, as he is undoubtedly in danger. Holmes and Moriarty begin their fight at the Reichenbach Falls.

On the way to the hotel, Watson meets Colonel Moran. When he arrives, he discovers that he has been deliberately lured away and runs to the waterfall with Peter Steiler Jr. back. You only discover the private detective's belongings at the waterfall. Holmes plunged Moriarty into the depths of the waterfall, but was shot himself by Colonel Moran and fell into the depths as well. The depressed Watson finds Holmes' message to him, while Steiler grieves loudly.

The tiger hunt

Milverton and Moriarty are dead, but Colonel Moran is still there, threatening Ronald Adair. Dr. Watson tries to save the young aristocrat by disguising himself as a Catholic priest and as a simple doctor.

However, he doesn't manage to protect Adair. The young man is found in his room with a revolver bullet in his head. The door was closed, the window was on the first floor, there were no marks under the window and no one heard a shot. However, Watson's suspicious activity around Adair does not escape Scotland Yard's Inspector Lestrade , and Watson is charged with the murder of Adair. He is only allowed to move freely in exceptional cases, but he is not allowed to leave London.

Here suddenly Sherlock Holmes appears. He had held on to a cliff at the Reichenbach Falls and waited until dark, although he was injured by Moran's bullets. He had to hide his signs of life from Watson and only confided in his brother Mycroft. The appearance of Holmes on Baker Street brings Dr. Watson and Mrs. Hudson to the fact that the two pass out first.

Little did Scotland Yard know that Holmes is back - unlike Colonel Moran. Moran decides to kill the detective. However, Holmes manages to outwit the murderer by showing him a wax figure made by the French sculptor Menier. Moran shoots the statue from the vacant house opposite and is caught by Holmes and Watson and handed over to the police. The Tatwaffe is a special air rifle that was specially made for Moriarty by a blind German mechanic and that shoots revolver bullets. This was also the weapon used in Ronald Adair's case.

Now the three most dangerous criminals away from London are Milverton, Moriarty and Moran. Sherlock Holmes says that the letter M is enough, and the letter N is the turn, the most mysterious letter. Suddenly Mrs. Hudson comes in and says that a lady is waiting for Holmes in the reception room.
