Wat Mahathat ( Thai : วัด มหาธาตุ ) is the abbreviation for several important Buddhist temple complexes ( Wat ) in Thailand . The name means Temple of the Great Relic because these temples all have a relic of the Buddha . Although there are several Wat Mahathat in Thailand, the full name is unmistakable.

Similar short names of Thai temples that can appear multiple times are Wat Phra That (Temple of the Holy Relic, e.g. Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong ) and Wat Phra Putthabat (Temple of the Footprint of Buddha, e.g. in Saraburi ).
