It has had the administrative status of a “city municipality” ( Thesaban Mueang ) since 1935 and in 2013 had 26,164 inhabitants.

geography

Suphan Buri is located about 90 kilometers northwest of Bangkok on the Mae Nam Tha Chin (Tha Chin River). Remnants of the old city are left on the right bank, the modern city is on the left bank.

The largest river in the county is the Mae Nam Tha Chin (Tha Chin River), also known locally as the Mae Nam Suphan (Suphan River).

history

Suphan Buri is a very old city that was already mentioned in ancient Buddhist chronicles. Some historians suspect that the legendary Suvarnabhumi is said to have been here. The city was probably founded in the Dvaravati period between 877 and 882 on the left bank of the Mae Nam Tha Chin with the name Phanchum Buri. Later rulers moved the city to the other bank of the river and named it Song Phan Buri (City of 2000) because 2000 officials were ordained monks at the same time.

Since King U Thong , the founder of the Ayutthaya Kingdom , probably had family ties here, he renamed them “U-Thong Buri” or “U-Thong” for short. At the same time he moved the city to a place southwest of the Thachin. A short time later it got its current name Suphan Buri from King Borommaracha I ( Pha-Ngua ).

In its history, Suphan Buri has always been a border town, and many fights between Siam and Burma took place in the vicinity up into the Rattanakosin era . King Mongkut was finally able to unite the individual settlements and move them to the eastern bank of the Thachin, where it is still today.

In modern times, the former Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa , who was also born here, had a decisive influence on urban development. During his reign he was accused of having spent about 90% of the national budget on his home province. Accordingly, every new infrastructure development bears his name: seven new schools were appropriately named "Banharn-Jaemsai 1", "Banharn-Jaemsai 2" etc. (Jaemsai is his wife's name), the 123 m high rises in today's city center “Banharn Tower”, nearby is the “Banharn Clock Tower” and the wide but low-traffic streets can be safely crossed via numerous “Banharn-Jaemsai pedestrian bridges”.

economy

In the Amphoe Mueang , in the district of the provincial capital, basketry is mainly produced. Furniture and utensils made of bamboo, which are manufactured in the Amphoe Bang Pla Ma and exported all over the world from there, are also sold.
