The Watzmann is a 106.2 m high elevation in the district of Bad Freienwalde in the Märkisch-Oderland district in the state of Brandenburg . He is therefore also called the Märkische Watzmann .

location

The elevation is west of the city center near the federal highway 167 (B 167). Coming from the north-west, this runs in a south-easterly direction into the center. South of the B 167 is the Bismarck Tower on the Schlossberg . The Watzmann rises a few hundred meters further southeast of this landmark in the city's mountain hiking park .

history

The region on the Alte Oder on the northwestern edge of the Oderbruch at the transition to the Barnim plateau was essentially formed during the last Vistula Ice Age . From the city's point of view, the name of the survey goes back to Bavarian workers who worked in Malchow Castle around 1180 - the location of the Bismarck Tower in the 21st century. They are said to have named the nearby elevation based on the central mountain range of the Berchtesgaden Alps , the Watzmann . The name Watzmann-Berg appeared in historical hiking maps from around 1900 . As part of the expansion of the mountain hiking park, craftsmen erected a three meter high summit cross on July 11, 2017 . It is made of larch wood ; therefore a round bench.
