The Watzmann Therme is a brine bath in Berchtesgaden , in the Upper Bavarian district of Berchtesgadener Land . The operator is Watzmann Therme GmbH , a subsidiary of the Berchtesgaden - Königssee tourism region association .

location

The thermal baths are located in Berchtesgaden, about halfway between the Hofbrauhaus and the salt mine . You can approach it via the B 305 , from which a bridge over the Berchtesgadener Ache leads to it after a few meters. The mountain range of the eponymous Watzmann can also be seen from the thermal baths .

description

The Watzmann Therme is divided into a water landscape with 900 m² as well as a sauna and a brine area and offers various wellness, massage and course offers. The water temperature of the indoor and outdoor pools in the saltwater landscape is 32 ° C each and has a salt content of 2-3%, which comes from the “natural salt deposits” of the region or the Berchtesgaden salt mine .

Along with Königssee , Jennerbahn , Kehlsteinhaus and salt mines, it is one of the big five tourist attractions within the Berchtesgadener Land . Nonetheless, since the peak year 2004, the thermal baths have recorded a continuous decline in visitor numbers from 365,000 at the time to only around 210,000 bathers per year (as of December 2015).

Building history

The predecessor of the Watzmann Therme was the Berchtesgaden indoor swimming pool , which opened on December 15, 1967 , and although it only had a swimming pool with 25-meter lanes and a sauna, it was the first and so far only within the then Berchtesgaden district as well as the Chiemgau and Rupertiwinkel was. In view of the changed or increased expectations of the bathers as well as an extensive list of deficiencies from the health department, the indoor pool was closed in 1993 and finally demolished in 1994. Negotiations between the district administrator and the mayors of the five member communities of the Berchtesgadener Land Tourist Association (today: Zweckverband Tourismusregion Berchtesgaden-Königssee ) began in 1992 for a successor building ; planning began in 1993 and the construction of the Watzmann Therme began on March 27, 1995. The baths were finally opened on March 15, 1997, the official inauguration of the Watzmann Therme took place on March 21, 1997.

Refurbishment from 2020

Way to the main entrance

After more than 20 years of operation, the parent company and the simultaneous builder of the thermal bath, the Zweckverband Tourismusregion Berchtesgaden - Königssee , plans to renovate and make the thermal bath more attractive with the aim of "surviving on the market for at least another 20 years", as in written request in August 2019. "There is no talk of a demolition in the near future."

The first information on this was published as early as 2018, and 17 million euros are to be invested in step-by-step modernization. The thermal baths should remain a family pool and not compete with the Rupertustherme in Bad Reichenhall , which, unlike the Watzmann thermal baths, focuses on wellness and spa . The latter could, however, be added as a new area to the thermal baths. In any case, it is clear that they "want to offer more than before". So there should be more "action" in the thermal baths. The sauna landscape is also to be expanded and new saunas in the outdoor area are to be added. Gastronomy and kitchen are to be relocated so that there can be a direct connection between the sauna area and gastronomy.

The conversion should be modular and be entirely dedicated to the topic of "mountain experience". An infinity pool and a textile sauna are also to come, as well as a new brine relaxation room. The renovation work could start in 2020 as of March 2018.
