Wayne B. Nottingham

Wayne Buckles Nottingham (born April 17, 1899 in Tipton (Indiana) , † December 4, 1964 in Aerdenhout ) was an American physicist.

Life

Nottingham began his studies at Purdue University and continued it in 1920 as a Fellow of the American-Scandinavian Foundation for one year at Uppsala University. After returning to the USA, he went to Princeton University , where he received his doctorate in 1928 under Karl Taylor Compton with the thesis Normal arc characteristic curves: dependence on absolute temperature of anode . In 1929 he also earned the title of electrical engineer from Purdue University. From 1926 to 1931 he was a fellow of the Bartol Research Foundation. In 1931 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . In the same year he moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as an assistant professor of physics . In 1936 he became an associate and in 1964 a full professor. At MIT, he conducted research in the Research Laboratory of Electronics on the physical principles of electronics and specifically on thermionic emissions. He developed various electronic measuring devices. During World War II he was an associate of the MIT Radiation Laboratory at the Office of Scientific Research and Development in Washington, DC

In 1952 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He died on December 4, 1964 while on a European tour in the Netherlands .

Honors

The Nottingham Prize has been awarded at the annual Physical Electronics Conference (PEC) since 1966.
