Samuel Friedrich Heinrich Wiggert (born December 29, 1791 in Möckern , Kingdom of Prussia , † December 1, 1871 in Magdeburg , German Empire ) was a German teacher, linguist and historian . He headed the Domgymnasium in Magdeburg from 1848 to 1860.

Life

Friedrich Wiggert was the son of a businessman in Möckern. From 1804 he attended the cathedral high school in Magdeburg. In 1810 he began to study Protestant theology in Halle / Saale , where he also attended philological lectures, after which he studied in Berlin .

In 1814 he was hired as a collaborator (simple teaching) at the Domgymnasium. In 1821 he was appointed senior teacher there after his appointment as director of the grammar school in Soest had been rejected by the Prussian ministry because of his young age. In 1835 he was appointed professor at the school, in 1848 he became head of the cathedral grammar school, initially on a temporary basis, and officially since 1849. In 1860 he resigned from this office due to increasing hearing loss.

Friedrich Wiggert achieved great merit through philological publications, in addition to the Wiggert psalm fragments that he described for the first time in 1832 and named after him, including some old German texts in manuscripts he discovered. He undertook extensive research on the early history of the city of Magdeburg and its surroundings and published on numismatic and other topics. Under his leadership, the Domgymnasium continued to gain prestige with around 500 students in the end.
