Wayne Lotter (born December 4, 1965 in Johannesburg - † August 16, 2017 in Dar es Salaam , Tanzania ) was a South African ecologist and conservation activist.

Life

Lotter earned a Masters in Nature Conservation . In 2004 he received his PhD from Tshwane University of Technology .

work life

He worked for government organizations and NGOs on numerous projects; Among other things, he was the International Team Leader for the Selous-Niassa Wildlife Protection Corridor Project (KfW) in southern Tanzania. In 2009 he founded the PAMS Foundation Tanzania with others. He was considered a pioneer of a multi-level approach to effective nature conservation: PAMS works with high-ranking government officials, carries out extensive public relations work, offers environmental education and trained hundreds of well-equipped wildlife rangers in Tanzania. The organization also works closely with farmers to minimize the conflicts between use and protection in the areas.

Lotter was for years active in the fight against organized crime of poaching and ivory trade in East Africa . The ivory trade in Tanzania and elephant poaching decreased noticeably in many areas in the period before Lotter's murder. Lotter promoted the close collaboration between PAMS and the National and Transnational Serious Crimes Investigation Unit (NTSCIU). Part of Lotter's work is documented in the 2016 documentary The Ivory Game . He was also asked to appear in the film in person, but declined on the grounds that he did not want to distract from the performance of the rangers in the field.

assassination

Wayne Lotter died on August 16, 2017 after his taxi in Dar es Salaam was stopped by another vehicle on the way from the airport to his hotel in the Masaki district and its occupants shot him. He died at the site of the attack. Lotter's death caused great consternation among conservationists around the world.

Jane Goodall wrote after Lotter's death:

"Wayne was a hero of mine, a hero to many, someone who devoted his life to protecting Africa's wildlife. … There is no doubt in my mind that Wayne's anti poaching efforts made a big difference in the fight to save Tanzania's elephants from the illegal ivory trade. ”

“Wayne was a hero to me, a hero to many, someone who dedicated his life to protecting African wildlife. … In my opinion, there is no doubt that Wayne's fight against poaching has done a lot to save Tanzania's elephants from illegal ivory trade. "
