Esmond Bradley Martin

Esmond Bradley Martin (born April 17, 1941 in New York City , † February 4, 2018 in Nairobi , Kenya ) was an American-Kenyan animal rights activist and conservation activist who fought for the conservation of rhinos and against the illegal trade in rhinoceros horns .

Life

Youth and education

Esmond Bradley Martin was the son of Esmond Bradley and Edwina Atwell Martin.

Martin studied geography at the University of Arizona and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1964 . In 1970 he was awarded a Ph.D. awarded by the University of Liverpool .

work life

From 1967 to 1983 Martin worked as a research assistant at the University of Nairobi and between 1974 and 1975 at the University of Dar es Salaam . Since 1978 he has been a consultant for the WWF and the IUCN .

He has been fascinated by elephants since he traveled to Kenya in the 1970s . It was in the midst of the heyday of elephant hunting, which led to the animal population being halved in the 1980s. Martin joined the Save the Elephants organization . Together with other investigators, he wrote detailed reports on the illegal trade.

He later became the United Nations Special Representative for the Protection of Rhinos. He fought to lower the demand for ivory to dry up the market. Martin's work was instrumental in uncovering the extent of the ivory trade in the US, Congo , Nigeria , Angola and other countries. In 1993 he was particularly committed to ending the trade in rhinoceros horns in China . He was instrumental in China banning ivory trade in the country in 2017. His research was mainly the black markets in Asia as the main buyer. As an expert in the trade in ivory and the horn of rhinos, Martin became known worldwide.

Martin was found dead on February 4, 2018 in Nairobi, Kenya, at the age of 76 with a stab wound to his neck. His death caused great consternation among conservationists around the world. According to the Frankfurt Zoological Society, the murder of Martin is already the fourth in 12 months to be committed by an environmentalist.
