We Are the City is a Canadian progressive rock band formed in 2008 in Kelowna . Singer Cayne McKenzie, drummer Andy Huculiak and guitarist David Menzel have now moved to Vancouver .
In addition to the band activities, they also produce music videos or films and write scripts.
history
We Are the City met in high school and started making music together. Cayne and Andy were attending the same film seminar at the time, which made the visual an integral part of the band's activities.
One year after the official formation (2008) the band released their debut album In a Quiet World .
In January 2010, We Are the City won first place in the PEAK Performance Project Contest hosted by radio station CKPK-FM , with a prize of $ 150,000. They used the profit to work on their new album.
The band suffered a brief setback when guitarist David Menzel left for personal reasons, but came back a short time later.
A period of touring, screenwriting, and directing followed. The second album Violent was finally released in Canada in 2013 , followed a year later by the film of the same name . In Europe, the album Violent was released on the Sinnbus label in 2015.
Violent (film)
After We Are the City had finished the script, they decided to have it translated into a foreign language. Since they had friends at the university in Bergen , the language choice fell on Norwegian .
“ We wanted to make a film with subtitles to do a good directing job. So you concentrate much better on the image level and the representation itself, instead of just paying attention to compliance with the text, ”explains singer McKenzie.
Another special feature of the film is that the actors were given the freedom to modify the text as they see fit and to improvise while it was being shot. The question of the gender of the main character was not specified in the script either: “ For a long time we only called her“ MC ”for“ main character ”, but gradually we all realized that the character is a woman. “Says director Huculiak.

Violent is about a girl who remembers the 5 people to whom she meant the most. Fleeing from life in the country, she eventually moved to live with family friends in the city. Your memories are evoked by a dramatic event.
Prices
The film was at the Vancouver International Film Festival , at the International Film Festival in Cannes and the International Film Festival in San Sebastian shown.
Violent was nominated for the “Independent Camera” Award of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival . He also won the “Best Canadian Film” and “Best British Columbia Film” awards at the Vancouver International Film Festival .
Magic House
The self-baptized "Magic House" was used by the band as a creative space for work on the album and film Violent before it was finally torn down in 2015. While the film was being worked on on the lower floor, the upper floor served as a kind of rehearsal room for the band.
