The Wehlen Bastion is a German steamship that was used as a passenger ferry on the Upper Elbe between the town of Wehlen and Pötzscha . Currently (as of July 2013) it is not operational. The ship is considered a technical monument.

history

The steel ship was built in 1925 in Dresden - Übigau as construction number 1302 by the Übigau shipyard. The ferry operators Herold & Matthes took over it in 1928 and used it as a permanent passenger ferry and tug for the wagon ferry. It was initially called Pötzscha-Wehlen-Bastei . In 1935 it became the property of Herold and Weber, later it was renamed Stadt Wehlen-Bastei .

Towards the end of the 1960s, a renovation took place: the wooden cabins were replaced by steel ones, the rectangular windows in front by square ones. From 1976 the ship belonged to the local traffic Pirna . It was used in ferry service until 1983, at the end mainly when the yaw ferry was out of service, flood or ice. Between 1983 and 1985 the Laubegast shipyard carried out a renovation. Among other things, the shipyard renewed the ship's floor. In addition, the machine was refurbished and the boiler re-tubed.

In 1987 VEB Kraftverkehr Pirna, as the new owner of the ship, applied for it to be declared a technical monument, since it was the last operational steam ferry on the Elbe. Two years later, however, during an overhaul, strong signs of wear were found on the rivets and the bottom of the boiler. The ship only received an operating license limited to two years and was put on land in 1991. Again it came to the Laubegast shipyard.

The then OVPS took over the ship in 1992 and renamed it. The renovation work continued until 1995, during which the external appearance of the steamship was restored. The steel superstructures from the 1960s were removed and replaced with wooden ones. The interior of the ship was changed in the course of this work: a toilet, a galley and two salons were installed.

Up until 1991, 89 passengers were allowed to use the ship on short routes, while only 60 people were permitted on longer routes. After the renovation, it was only allowed for 40 passengers.
