The defense tower ( Slovenian : Obrambni stolp , Italian : Torre muraria ) or defense tower in the village of Podpeč , which belongs to the municipality of Koper, is a medieval defense structure in southwestern Slovenia .

history

The fortified tower had existed since the early 15th century at the latest. At that time, Istria was part of the Republic of Venice . Together with a fortified cave , the tower served as a defensive position during the Hungarian invasions in 1411. The complex played an important role during Ottoman attacks between 1470 and 1501 during the Second and Third Venetian Turkish Wars . In 1513 Austrian troops from nearby Trieste tried to conquer the tower, which did not succeed. The defense tower remained in their possession until the end of the Republic of Venice in 1797. In 1988 the facility was extensively restored.

Building

The tower is round. It has four floors . It was built from white chiseled stone with sandstone inlays . The height of the tower is about 17 meters. Originally it was covered at the top with stone slabs.
