The Weißensee is a 2.3 km long lake with a circumference of 6.1 km in the Ostallgäu district in Bavaria west of Füssen on the northern edge of the Alps . Only 500 meters further south is the higher Alatsee . The name Weißensee derives either from its appearance, which is shimmering white due to deposited lime, or can be explained by the fact that an Alemanni named Wizo settled here around 600 AD.

The lake is located in the protected landscape area in the area of the city of Füssen and the communities Weissensee, Eisenberg and Pfronten in the district of Füssen (LSG-00115.01).

In 753, the Frankish King Pippin bequeathed the lake and its surrounding area to Bishop Wikterp of Augsburg in favor of the newly created St. Mang monastery cell. After many changes, the city of Füssen finally acquired the lake with fishing rights from private hands in 1928.

The Weißensee owes its shape to the Ice Ages and especially to the Lech Glacier , and dead ice probably helped shape it.

With a length of 2.2 kilometers from east to west, an average width of almost 600 meters and a depth of up to 25 meters, it covers an area of 1.35 square kilometers and has a catchment area of almost 15 square kilometers.

Whitefish, pikeperch, pike, eel, tench, char, lake trout and carp live in it, while swans, great crested grebes , coots and several species of wild ducks cavort on it.

In summer, the lake is used intensively as a bathing lake by both locals and tourists. It is used for ice skating in winter. There is a hiking trail around the lake.
